PURPOSE OF PRACTICUM

The purposes of a practicum can vary depending on the specific field or discipline, but this practicum taught me a lot of things on why do this kind of activity happens.

​

  1. Application of Knowledge: This practicum gives me the opportunity to apply what I have learned in a real-world setting, which helps solidify my understanding and develop practical skills.

  2. Skill Enhancement: The practicum help me develop and enhance specific skills relevant to my field of study.

  3. Networking and Professional Connections: During my practicum, I have the chance to interact with professionals in my chosen field.

  4. Career Exploration and Decision-Making: The practicum provides me with a firsthand experience of my desired profession.

  5. Personal Growth and Development: Through the challenges and successes I encountered during a practicum, I learned to navigate real-world situations, work effectively in teams, and enhance my  overall personal and professional growth.

           In summary, a practicum serves as a bridge between theory and practice, facilitating the application of knowledge, skill development, networking opportunities, career exploration, and personal growth. It is a valuable learning experience that prepares students for their future professional endeavors.

PROCEDURES OF PRACTICUM

The teaching process involves several key steps, including instructional planning, lesson delivery, assessment, and evaluation. These steps are crucial for effective teaching. Instructional planning, specifically the creation of a lesson plan, is of utmost importance as it provides teachers with a roadmap to ensure a smooth and well-structured teaching and learning experience.

  1. Before delivering a lesson, it is important to have a thorough understanding of the topic. This includes formulating clear lesson objectives that align with the curriculum being used, as well as developing interactive and compelling activities that are tailored to both the lesson and the students’ needs.

  2. Consistently encourage students to make a genuine effort to communicate using the English language when asking and answering questions.

  3. Emphasize to them that they should feel comfortable and not be hesitant to ask questions related to the lesson.

  4. Always adhere to the initial activity outlined in my lesson plan and then proceed to the main part of the lesson.

  5. Consistently ensure that my students actively participate in answering my questions and regularly check their understanding of the lesson by asking them for feedback.

  6.  Utilizing the English language as it serves as our primary mode of communication, but I also provide a Vietnamese translation below my explanations for better comprehension.

OUTCOMES OF PRACTICUM

The outcomes of my practicum refer to the results and achievements that I have experienced and gained through my practical learning experience. These outcomes could include the development of new skills, the application of theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting, the acquisition of practical experience, the enhancement of professional competence, and the achievement of specific learning objectives. The practicum outcomes serve as evidence of my growth, learning, and readiness to apply my knowledge and skills in my chosen field or profession.

  1. Skill Development: The practicum may enhances my communication skills, problem-solving abilities and technical expertise.

  2. Networking Opportunities: Through the practicum, I have the chance to establish connections and build professional relationships with my mentors, supervisors, and industry professionals, creating potential future employment or collaboration opportunities.

  3. Increased Confidence: Successfully completing this practicum boost's my self-confidence and self-efficacy.

  4. Professional Development: The practicum provides me opportunities for continuous learning and professional growth, as I have received feedback, guidance, and mentorship from experienced professionals.

  5. Resume and Portfolio Building: This practicum experience adds valuable content to my resume or portfolio, demonstrating a practical skills, achievements, and real-world application of my knowledge.

CHALLENGES OF PRACTICUM

Participating in a practicum can present various challenges for individuals. These challenges can be both personal and professional, requiring individuals to navigate unfamiliar situations and adapt to new environments. One common challenge is the adjustment to a different work culture and expectations. Each workplace has its own unique dynamics, protocols, and communication styles, which may be different from what individuals are accustomed to. This can require a period of adjustment and learning to effectively navigate the workplace environment.

  1. Language Barrier: I had face challenges in communication due to language differences between the host country and my native language. Another problem is some students can't understand English language easily.

  2. Different Education System: My country have its own education system, curriculum, and teaching methodologies which is far too different from the host school that we are teaching.

  3. Limited Resources: The instructional materials expense are from my own money which I didn't expect since we are staying in a university which in my country provides free printing.

  4. Professional Expectations: This practicum gives high expectations from my supervisors and school administrators that I am afraid to make mistakes.

  5. Workload and Time Management: This practicum requires a lot of time from me from waking up 4 hours earlier than my class, balancing lesson preparation, teaching responsibilities, and reflective practice.

Student teaching can be challenging, but it’s an essential step in becoming a competent and effective educator. The overall impression is one of personal and professional growth, skill development, and the satisfaction of contributing to the education of students.

SUGGESTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The SEA Teacher Program offers a valuable opportunity for pre-service teachers to gain international teaching experience and cultural exchange. To make the most of this program, here are some suggestions and recommendations:

​Enhanced Pre-Program Orientation

 

Provide a comprehensive pre-program orientation for participants to familiarize themselves with the program’s objectives, expectations, and cultural nuances of the host country. This will help participants better prepare for their teaching experience.

​MEnTORSHIP AND GUIDANCE

 

Assign experienced mentors to support and guide participants throughout their teaching journey. Mentors can provide valuable insights, offer feedback, and assist with any challenges participants may encounter.

CULTURAL IMMERSION AND ACTIVITIES

​

​Incorporate cultural immersion activities into the program to allow participants to fully experience the local culture and traditions. This can include language classes, visits to historical sites, and interaction with local communities.
